Christmas Decorating Before Thanksgiving Meme
A friend of mine posted a photo of her newly decorated Christmas tree to Facebook on the Sunday after Halloween.
She offered no reason as to why she had decorated for the December holiday so early, none beside the simple fact that she loves the Christmas season.
A few days later, the same woman removed the post. It seems some of her friends were so irritated by the idea of someone decorating for Christmas before Thanksgiving they chastised her.
Although I was disappointed by the response, I wasn't surprised.
It seems every year about this time the admonitions begin.
Shoppers grumble about the omnipresence of "Jingle Bells" and Christmas trees and "Ho Ho Hos" in the retail stores. Comical memes on social media show Tom Turkey defending his territory on the calendar from Santa Claus with a loaded blunderbuss. And folks in the morning coffee klatch lament the way the Thanksgiving holiday has been lost in the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations.
Earlier this week, a sheepish grin spread across a coworker's face when she quietly mentioned she'd put up her tree last weekend.
I believe her exact words were, "I love Christmas. Don't judge me."
I wouldn't judge her. Not for putting up her Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving.
If I hadn't been repainting my living room, my tree would've been up last weekend already, too.
The way I see it, there are some people out there who view Thanksgiving as something more than a holiday unto its own. Rather, it's the beginning of one long wonderful season.
It's a time when people laugh a little easier, give a little more generously and feel justified in cashing in those paid vacation days they feel pressured to leave on the table during the other 10 months of the year. It's a time for family and friends and for embracing the memories of the special people who've been pushed from our lives by tragedy or circumstance.
There are some out there who have a hunger that the food served during Thanksgiving dinner can't satisfy.
Decorating for Christmas before Thanksgiving doesn't mean the November holiday is going unnoticed. It means there are people out there who yearn for more time to enjoy the time of year when peace on earth somehow seems within reach.
That's not something I can complain about.
I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving and a blessed Christmas season.
